Nadeesha Godamunne, Urbis 2, 2009
I’d never heard of Godamunne until this morning when Mary Katrantzou uploaded an illustration of her as a part of her AW12 Illustration competition. At first, the photo uploaded by Katrantzou gave hints of a Downton-esque elegance, which I appreciate in all fashion illustration (Downton is, after all, my favorite illustrator) but once I googled her, I found her style to be even more mesmerizing (than the photo uploaded by Katrantzou) and much more unique than yet another Downton wannabe. You can tell she’s heavily influenced by Schiele; her work has the same “grotesque” qualities you can find in Egon’s work, yet there is also something somewhat Renoir-esque about her style but with just the right type of attitude to constitute her work as “fashion” illustration. You can find some of her work on her website.
